$18,000.00

Offered is a framed suite of four 20th Century Pop Art artist, Alex Katz signed and numbered lithographs, Night: William Dunas Dance Suite, 1979. Alex Kata (1927-) born in NYC attended an arts program in High School and continued with his studies in figurative and modern art at Cooper Union. Katz was fully immeshed in the New York art scene of the 40s through the 1960s. By the late 1950s, Katz would attempt greater realism in his paintings. He became increasingly interested in portraiture and painted his friends and in particular his wife and muse, Ada. Katz began using monochrome backgrounds, which would become a defining characteristic of his style, anticipating Pop Art and separating him from gestural figure painters and the New Perceptual Realism. Katz would dabble in painted cut out figures on wood and then in the 1960’s influenced by movies, television and “Madison Ave”, Katz produced large scale paintings, wood cut outs and began to delve heavily into print making. Katz would go on to produce many editions in lithography, etching, silkscreen, woodcut and linoleum cut. After 1964, Katz increasingly portrayed groups of figures. He would continue painting these complex groups into the 1970s, portraying the social world of painters, poets, critics, and other colleagues that surrounded him. He designed sets and costumes for the choreographer Paul Taylor and would often paint many images of dancers throughout the years. The later part of the 20th century was spent on landscapes. In the early 2000s, Katz focused on large scale portraits with cropped faces. He has shown in over 200 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions. Katz has pieces that are permanent installations in museums all over the globe. Katz’ pieces continue to appreciate in value. Editions: 100/100, 100/125, AP 42/42 and 100/100. The set can be purchased in its entirety or by the piece at $5000 per piece. Feel free to request more images.
